Utopia

Written by Lincoln Child

Reviewed by Tom A. Wright

So many books and movies cram the notion that technology is bad down our throats, that it is quite refreshing to find gem that avoids this tired cliché and delivers an exciting story. Utopia is such a gem. Andrew Warne, a software engineer with radical artificial intelligence (AI) ideas for advanced robotics, finds himself defending his creations. Summoned to Utopia, a state-of-the-art amusement park, he must find out why his software is altering, with dire consequences, the robotics system all over the park. With his teenage daughter sampling the groundbreaking rides, his ex-girlfriend running the place, and sophisticated thieves infiltrating and taking control of every system within the park, Warne must use his unique talents to get everything under control before thousands of lives are lost.

This story could easily be a Michael Crichton novel, but Child does it much better. The characters, the technology, the plot, all pull you into the story and won't let you go. On top of that, Utopia could easily become a great movie. This is the first book I've read by Lincoln Child, but I can guarantee it won't be the last.
