On Sunday October 11,
Elizabeth Kaites read from her new collection of personal essays, “A Common Thread: Stories of Our Oneness” at the PFAA Gallery.

In addition, the issue of Prescott College's literary magazine Alligator Juniper that won national honors contained Elaine's essay "A Prayer for Earl." Elaine says she feels like the proverbial bridesmaid - always a mention and never a prize winner!
She's also staying busy by facilitating the August and September networking meetings while Karen Despain fills in at her old editorial position at the Prescott Daily Courier, and has organized details for the PWP mentoring project for young writers.

The anthology "Passages: Timeless Voyages of Spirit," in which her personal essay, "Will you Be A Priest?" appears,  has been republished online in a Japanese  version, alongside an English version!

PWP Webmaster Kate Robinson was honored to be interviewed by romance writer Amber Polo on her Wordshaping blog on July 26. Amber has an impressive weekly interview schedule with a wide variety of writers!

Congratulations to Diane Line, author of At Heaven's Doorway: Mystical Golden Roses for Spiritual Growth, for her interview on July 6 with Sandy Moss on KQNA, and for her booksigning at Barnes and Noble on July 11.

Recently Diane met another writer who said that At Heaven's Doorway "jumped off the shelf at her" at the Prescott Public library!

Good news from David Quinn:
"IUniverse designated my new historical novella, Leviathan's Master, an Editor's Choice selection. This means it will receive an Editor's Choice Seal on the back cover and be placed in a preferred section of their on-line bookstore reserved for such works. Perhaps more importantly, it means that I can potentially qualify for the Rising Star and Star promotional programs. My book now goes into interior design!"

Congrats to Kathryn Wilkens on her travel piece - In the Footsteps of Pharoahs in Egypt -  and the gallery of her photos in the Los Angeles Times on June 4, 2009 - and for the journey itself. May she have many more pleasant journeys and exciting features!

Double congrats to Joe Dibuduo on the June publication of Magic Mirror, his flash fiction story and poem on A Long Story Short.com. Joe says, “ Beside the story is the poem I wrote first, and then modeled the story on the poem.”

On July 1 he posted a 21,500-word manuscript that includes narrative nonfiction and three short stories as an e-book download at Scribd.com and Smashwords.com. A Penis Manologue is Joe's response after reading and seeing the stage version of the smash hit Vagina Monologues by Eve Ensler.

“The Elk in the Attic” To Premiere As Musical in 2010

The author of “The Elk in the Attic,” Christopher Hoy, says if everything goes according to plan, the popular children’s book will be presented on the stage of the newly re-modeled Prescott Elks Opera House in Spring 2010 as a musical play.

“This will be a great opportunity for local children to display their acting, dancing and singing talents,” says Mr. Hoy, “while helping to raise money for the Elks Opera House Foundation.”

A recent conversation with Foundation Board member Elisabeth Ruffner and Dawn Castaneda, City of Prescott Event Coordinator at the Opera House, about various ways to promote the book version of “The Elk in the Attic” (over 750 sold so far, with all net proceeds going to the Elks Opera House Foundation), led Mr. Hoy to the realization that the story could be inexpensively produced as a stage play.

“We decided to take the old-fashioned barn-raising approach,” says Hoy, “in order to keep costs low. We’re going to gather together a bunch of motivated volunteers, amateur and professional, and just do this. No one will get paid, but everyone will share in the fun.”

Mr. Hoy says he and several members of the Professional Writers of Prescott are working now on a script. “We should have the script completed by the end of this summer,” he says. “Meantime, we are looking for more people who want to help us create costumes, build and paint sets, score original music and assist with choreography.”

Several local people gave freely of their time and talent to create the children’s book so it could be sold profitably to help support the Elks Opera House renovation. Christopher Hoy donated the manuscript; Walt Anderson created the illustrations; Bridget Reynolds contributed the book design; Leslie Hoy edited the story; and Elisabeth and Melissa Ruffner, owners of Primrose Press, published the book. Wendy Elgen, owner of Classic Prescott Printing, kept production costs exceptionally low.

The story is about drought-weary forest animals that temporarily take up residence in a small town. Nine-year-old Tim Armstrong discovers a huge bull elk named Bill is living in the attic above his bedroom . . . and he’s not the only kid at his school with new animal friends. Once adults begin to notice the animal invasion, tension mounts and the adventure escalates. But just as events threaten to get out of hand, high-flying Eagle returns from a trip to the top of the world with important news about a change in the weather.

“The story is a delight to read, with a moral so deep one is engaged long after the book is put down,” says Elisabeth Ruffner.

To read a sample chapter of “The Elk in the Attic,” visit the author’s web site at www.elkintheattic.com. The book is available in select stores in Prescott and can also be purchased in the lobby of the Elks Opera House. To order the book online, visit www.elksoperahouse.com

If you are interested in volunteering to help with any phase of the musical play, please contact Chris Hoy at 445-4218 or cehoy@cableone.net.

Four successful Prescott authors - three PWP members and a PWP speaker -  hosted a “Meet and Greet” booksigning at Hastings in Prescott on May 2, 2009:

Dorothy Cora Moore based her novel, The Atlanteans, on thirty years of research. Laced with prophecy and the Ageless Wisdom Teachings, the book earned a rare 5-star review. The story about two best friends, a lawyer and a doctor from Harvard, begins as a fun yacht race and turns into an unexpected quest. See www.TheAtlanteans.com.

Cody Lundin, nationally renowned author of When All Hell Breaks Loose: Stuff You Need to Survive When Disaster Strikes and 98.6 Degrees: The Art of Keeping Your Ass Alive, teaches outdoor survival skills, primitive living skills and urban preparedness. Lundin’s Aboriginal Living Skills School has been featured in dozens of national and international media sources, and he's made two presentations for PWP. See www.CodyLundin.com.

David M. Quinn is the award-winning author of It May Be Forever – An Irish Rebel on the American Frontier. The bittersweet tale is based upon the real-life biography of his great, great uncle Michael Quinn. Born in Ireland's Great Famine, Michael is struck by British injustice and discrimination, and joins rebels determined to free Ireland from its colonial rulers. However, defeat on the battlefield lands him on the untamed plains of the American West. See www.ItMayBeForever.com.

Diane Line, author of At Heaven's Doorway: Mystical Golden Roses for Spiritual Growth,
shares a beautiful and heartwarming account of her many spiritual experiences with visions, guardian angels, and heavenly messages. At Heaven's Doorway follows the author through the deaths of her mother, father and baby grandson - a powerful and comforting book for all who have lost someone they love. See www.AtHeavensDoorway.com.

Susan McElheran's short story "Fenn, Brother of Francis" has been shortlisted for the 2009 Aeon Award, given annually by Albedo One, Ireland's Magazine of Fantasy, Science Fiction, and Horror.  Susan is the proprietor of the lovely Old Sage Bookshop at St. Michael's in Prescott, and one of Prescott's Mad Women Poets.

Cool beans . . . er . . . birdies . . . poet Lady Mathers reports that she and "a friend of mine, Scott Godsil, were interviewed for a channel 12 news segment on Earth Day and three of pictures you see that are still pics shown are mine. The segments aired the following day on the 5pm channel 12 news. I've been photographing a mother great horned owl and her two babies for three weeks now. Watch Great Horned Owls on Whiskey Row for more info!

Lady wants PWP members and local poets who write poetry to submit works for the online Monsoon magazine. "I need a short one-paragraph bio and 1-2 poems not to exceed 450 words total. Send them to me at this email address instead of going through the Monsoon site."

Sedona poet Marvel J. Warren's new volume, A Day in the Death of Intolerance, was published recently by AuthorHouse and  is available for purchase!

"After multi-rejections these last weeks," PWP Secretary Elaine Jordan's essay, 'Reflections,' has been published at Damselfly Press. "I'm pleased to have it there because it's a woman's press.(Damselflies must all be girls)." See April 12 entry.

Also, "Lo and Behold," a new version of Elaine's essay "Water into Wine" was also published (April 15)  at Cascadia Publishing House in their Spring '09 issue of
Dreamseeker.

Willma Gore says "the on-line writer organization Women On Writing surprised me with an honorable mention package for my recently-submitted essay-contest entry, "Forget Lavish Space, I Need Muse Space." The H/M award includes three books, a sturdy, purse-size carry case and incidental toiletries from Skirt Magazine, co-sponsor of the contest series. The nicest part of the "package" was a hand-written message from one of the editors: '. . . [theessay] is excellent in every way.  Keep up the wonderful writing.  We adore it. Love, Angela & W.O.W.'  Of course 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes were presented in $$$ but, I'll take any "prizes" offered!

If that's not enough, Willma's article, "Writer Conferences, Clubs & Contests" appears in
the May/June issue of Working Writer. Her piece on the value of writer workshops (she now lead five) was in the March/April issue. Such distinguished writers as Patricia Fry and Moira Allen, frequently appear in these pages.

While the PWP Webmaster was setting up this announcement, she stumbled on a mention of Willma by author Marilyn Meredith on April 25, 2009 on the "Mysterious People" blog - well, no, Willma's not the mystery - the blog is for mystery, suspense, thriller, and crime writers! Marilyn says, "Once I joined a critique group, about 30 years ago, I met a wonderful author named Willma Gore who helped me more with my writing than any other person . . . She taught me more than any writing class or conference I ever attended . . ."

PWP Treasurer Leota Hoover's essay Hunter appears in the poetry & non-fiction contest issue (Winter/Spring 2009) of So To Speak, A Feminist Journal of Language & Art published by George Mason University. She didn't win but felt honored to be one of the finalists.

Continuing the Poetry Month celebration, on Thursday, April 9, the Mad Women Poets appeared in the Founders Suite at the Prescott Public Library. Readers included Mary Carvell Bragg, Amy Mae Calhoun, Megan Buchanan Cherry, Catherine Euler, Dee Hamilton, and Susan McElheran.

Kathleen Ewing published an April article in Writing for DOLLARS! called
"Do You Google Yourself?" I periodically Google myself in the conventional way, but Kathleen's feature tipped me to get Google alerts in my name and for writers, there are many good reasons why! Thanks, girl!

To celebrate April Fools Day, romance writer Amber Polo blogged about April Fools Sex at GottaReadReviews. no joke! See also Amber's blog at Blogspot, and you can find Amber on Facebook at
http://tiny.cc/AmberFacebook.

Don Dahlin had a book signing on Saturday March 28 at Hastings Books, Music and Video in Prescott and signed both of his books: A Practical Handbook for Unlimited Spiritual Ability: Optimum Self-Government and The Conspiracy, Fraud, Quackery and Death of Psychiatry: Plus Big Pharma and FDA Scams You Should Know About!. Every attendee had a chance to win a free book.

Willma Gore sent PWP a neat update about  a "recycled" or republished fiction piece, which we'll relate to you this summer when the story comes out in an anthology after having been published in a  Montana university literary mag. At a PWP member networking recently, we were discussing how to re-publish your work - always a good idea to keep recognition and sometimes dollars flowing by keeping your rights to a work, whether fiction or nonfiction. Willma says, "My above little history needs to be known by others as one of the 'never give up' recommendations."

The March 14 Home Forum page of the Christian Science Monitor carries Willma's essay about how "our kids put on a puppet show in the back of our RV for the amusement of followers as we traveled along the highway. The piece is titled Highway Entertainment. When the check arrives, I'll be $75 richer. Good pay for 200 words!"

An extensive bio about our indomitable Willma and her life-long "writing addiction" now appears in the Phoenix Writers Club website.

Kastara Parasava is looking and sounding great on her YouTube video featuring her STAR*CHILD'S GUIDEBOOK: Introducing the Universal Language by her Awakening Awareness Publications.

For more information see her website, Awakening Awareness.

Our Kathryn Wilkens is also the president of the Inland Empire chapter of the California Writers Club. She has an essay, "Endings: Heightened Prose for Depths of Meaning" in the March issue of the club's journal. To read it, go to http://www.angelfire.com/amiga/iecwc/freshink.html. Click on the magazine cover to open the pdf. Kathryn's essay is on p. 3 of the pdf.

You'll also enjoy her photography at Kat Wilkens Photo Gallery!

Terri New, writer and multimedia producer for Incite Productions, was recently nominated for the 2009 Governor's Arts Awards, in the individual category for her Theater Arts title, ALICE: I Feel So Me Now. "They had a lovely reception in Phoenix for the Governor's Arts Awards nominees. The house where the reception was held was in itself an art gallery, plus wonderful food and wine, nice!"

The28th Annual Governor's Arts Awards will be conferred on April 14th at the Arizona Biltmore Frank Lloyd Wright Ballroom in Phoenix.

Kathleen's favorite writing and publishing mentor, Patricia Fry, also has an article in the same issue of WD.

Three cheers to Dorothy Cora Moore! In late February, she was interviewed a second time by Coast to Coast in conjunction with a recent news report about a rectangle of criss-crossed lines the size of Wales that lies under the Atlantic Ocean, 620 miles west of the African coast near the Canary Islands. Dot is the author of The Atlanteans, a novel including extensive research about the fabled lost island continent. For more information about our author and her book, see www.theatlanteans.com.

Our intrepid author Amber Polo blogged in late February (20) about her paranormal romance, Romancing Rebecca,
on
Skhye's Ramblings blog . . . and . . . the novel won a rousing 3rd place in the Most Humorous Category in the Anne Bonney Readers' Choice Award Contest (Ancient City Romance Authors, St. Augustine, FL.Amber says, "Booksellers judged the final round! And all the other books were by multi-pubbed authors from 'big' publishers."

Congrats to PWP Networking Chair Karen DeSpain for her timely piece in the online Daily Courier about the aging Juvenile Center and juvenile services in Prescott!

Karen is also on the Prescott Area Habitat for Humanity Board of Directors and the Arizona's Children Association regional board, where
she 's editor of PAHH's quarterly newsletter and helps ACA with publicity to promote its mission of helping children and families.
Recently, she became a member of the newly formed nine-member Yavapai County Arizona Centennial Committee.

Amber Polo is back on a roll! Her paranormal romance Romancing Rebecca is a finalist in the "Anne Bonney Readers' Choice Award Contest" (Ancient City Romance Authors, St. Augustine, FL) - Most Humorous Category!

Amber reports, "Winners will be announced in late February - in time for my birthday! Booksellers will judge the final round! In past years each category had only have 3 finalists. First Place winners in each category will be included on a poster of Anne-Bonney Readers’ Choice Award winners placed in independent bookstores around the country.

This is what ACRA says about Anne Bonney, history's most infamous woman pirate. Some call her a feminist who chose piracy as way of rebelling against a male-dominated world; others portray her as a tomboy who never grew up. Whatever her motives, in deed and daring, Anne Bonney, was a plunderer, cutthroat, sailor, ransomer, raider, and general menace to maritime commerce in the Caribbean. In short, most pirates probably would have considered her an asset to their trade. That is the reason we've named our contest after her. We're looking for the best books the industry has to offer, books that stand out, books that are an asset to our trade."

We're proud that Dot Moore is in the news again: "I had a live two-hour interview with George Noory of Coast to Coast on Friday, January 23, 2009. The broadcast is now available on a Streamlink pod for the next three months at http://www.coasttocoastam.com/shows/2009/01/23.html " Here's some PR about the show:

Atlantis, Dr. Karagulla & Shapeshifters

Appearing in the first half of the show, author Dorothy Cora Moore discussed her novel, The Atlanteans, and shared her extensive research on Atlantis. Moore said many of the ideas presented in her book were inspired by the work of famed psychic Edgar Cayce, who prophesied about the existence of the fabled lost continent.

According to Moore, Atlantis was a real island continent, roughly the size of the United States, located in the center of the Atlantic Ocean. It was an advanced civilization ruled by 'metaphysical white magicians' who came to our planet from another star system in our Milky Way Galaxy, she added.

Moore believes a catastrophic event occurred about 25,000 year ago that destroyed Atlantis and caused the Earth to wobble. Moore also spoke about George's late aunt, Dr. Shafica Karagulla, a noted psychiatrist who became fascinated with brain states and higher sense perception.

I’ve not communicated with many of you in the last two years while building our home and retreat center.  It has truly been a labor of Love, one that I feel is palpable.  We feel incredibly blessed to be able to live in such a magical, salk’a (wild, liberated) energy spot, and now we get to share it with you!

Below please find an invitation for our first Open House in January.  (Having computer troubles, so I am not able to attach a nifty invitation.)  I realize many of you are too far away to join us, we hope to have you in Spirit.

But I haven’t been sitting idle these many months!  In addition to house building, my second book, The Art of Intent: Healing Yourself and Others, is almost finished. Then, in February and March, I will be attending a month-long Yoga Teacher Training at the Kripalu Institute.  In addition to my own energetic work, this will allow me to offer yoga workshops here at the retreat center, and I anticipate teaching regular classes in Skull Valley and in Prescott.

We wish you a merry holiday time, and may you be with all the beings you hold dear.
With much love in our hearts,

Marilyn (Markham Petrich) and Al Petrich

Cheers to our trusty PWP Treasurer Leota McCown Hoover for the first publication announcement of 2009! "Just got my copy of 2009 Byline Calendar in the mail last week and good to their word, I am among the writers featured. Called Barnes and Noble and they don’t have them in stock (they did last year) but if interested, calendars can be purchased at www.bylinescalendar.com. Here’s wishing for lots of acceptance letters and good health for all of us in 2009."

Freelancer Kathleen Ewing came blazing to the finish line in a very close second for early 2009 publication. Not only does Kathleen have a new article titled Income Loss Prevention in the Writing for DOLLARS! newsletter, she also has a feature on evacuating your horse stable she forgot to tell us about in the Nov/Dec issue of TrailBLAZER. Another feature on funding your trail project appears in the Jan issue and "I just picked up my assignment for Feb!"

Note - Kathleen's archive of Writing for DOLLARS! articles can be viewed at the end of the new article - and the others are also posted on an author database. Her publishing credits include articles in American Falconry and Hobby Farms. She placed in both the fiction and nonfiction categories of the 2008 PWP Writing Contest.

And just in case that's not enough, Kathleen was also praised by author and publishing maven Patricia Fry in the January 3, 2009 post of her blog, "The Words We Write." Patricia was one of PWP's 2008 speakers: "One of my most loyal blog readers is Kathleen Ewing of Prescott, Arizona. Kathleen is, among other things, a working freelance writer and I'm seeing her articles sprinkled all over the Internet these days. Here's one you might want to ... (read more)!

While recruiting writers for our PWP Meet Yourself feature, I found that Juanita Hassenstab-Alomar recently published a YA novel, Spirit Jar (Trafford, April 2008).

Spirit Jar is available online at Amazon - see a synopsis of the story there, too. It's also available from the publisher, Trafford UK. And at Target!  See also Trafford's PR and a reader comment on Juanita's PWP Book Review page .

Kathryn Wilkens was also in a first of the year photo finish with two publications - the posting of an essay, "Writing with Dazzle and Pizzazz" online at Inkbyte, and an essay and recipe, "Cowboy Comfort Food" in the January 14 Home Forum pages of the Christian Science Monitor!

Originally published in ByLine Magazine, PWP PR Chair says, "I heartily recommend it ["Writing with Dazzle and Pizzazz"]  - better than just an ordinary recommendation - to writers in all genres."

Many of you probably don't know that Kathryn Wilkens is the president of the Inland Empire California Writers Club. Thought you would enjoy looking at her club's newsletter and reading her President's Message, which is very appropriate for the start of the New Year.

Go to http://www.angelfire.com/amiga/iecwc/freshink.html and click on the cover to get inside. Kathryn's message is the first article.

PS - She's also a wonderful photographer - Click the picture to view her online photo album!

C
arl Hitchens wishes all a Happy New Year and reports that he's "been changing over my entire website. Phasing out the old web pages."

More members than we thought possible braved rain, snow, and wind to attend the 2008 Holiday party, a potluck at the lovely Prescott Community Center. The top three winners of the 6-word story contest (and there were some clever ones, too, that didn't make the top three) were:

1st place - Ethan Davis - “Will you? Yes! When? Not now!”

2nd place - Leota Hoover - “Morning sickness. Papa’s shotgun. Married bliss.”

3rd place by Arlene Eisenbise - “Plan and plot. Another Potter, not.”

The winners received a plate of Mary Ann Kozel’s cookies and a book donated by Kris Neri from her Well Red Coyote bookstore.

Thank you, Mary Ann and Kris!

Ethan, Leota, and Arlene
